Health Benefits of Onion

Onion has been believed as a protection against vampires. In middle ages, people put onions on their doors, hang it on windows and even on their body because it was believed that the smell of the onion keeps the vampires and evil spirits away. But what's more convincing to this belief is that onion has lots of health benefits than to counter evil spirits.


There are two types of onions, the green onion and bulbing onion, and each type has different varieties. Onions can be eaten raw or cooked. Onions are commonly used by many cultures around the world as an ingredient in different dishes.

Aside to season and give pungent aroma to dishes, onions also help against common illnesses such as:

* colds
* asthma
* coughs
* bacterial infections
* breathing problems
* influenza
* tuberculosis
* insomnia
* pneumonia
* anti allergy
* reduce inflammation
* high blood pressure
* lower cholesterol
* cancer prevention

Although onion can be eaten as raw or cooked but consuming large quantity of onions would result to stomach distress and gastrointestinal problem that may result in nausea and diarrhea.
